Shella Saint Fleur-Lominy, MD, PhD
Shella Saint Fleur-Lominy, MD, PhD, was born and raised in Haiti, believing that anything a human being can do, women can do. She excelled in subjects traditionally thought to be better fitted for male students at École Saint Ésprit de Darbonne and Lycée Anacaona de Léogane. Despite a disappointing period after her failure to integrate medical school in Haiti, her belief in the potential of women in medicine has driven her through her medical career at New York University Grossman School of Medicine. She joined the faculty after 14 years of formal training at NYU, aiming to serve and contribute to society in patient care, research, teaching, and community service. Her interest in medicine stems from her childhood in Haiti, witnessing the suffering of sick people and the potential impact of qualified professionals on society. Since graduating from Brooklyn College in 2003, she has been at NYU SOM as a Medical Scientist Training Program student. After 7 years of studies, she obtained a PhD in immunology and molecular oncology, an MD degree, and a research track residency and fellowship in internal medicine and hematology and medical oncology. She has conducted research on cytokine signaling in T cells, calcium signaling in T cell acute Lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL), and genetic and epigenetic changes associated with B-ALL. She joined the faculty of NYUSOM in October 2017 as an instructor of Medicine and is now an Assistant Professor. She provides clinical care to patients with hematological disorders, focusing on leukemia patients. She is actively involved in teaching medical students, residents, and fellows, and has been voted the hematology teacher of year at NYUSOM. She has also been active in community volunteerism, focusing on improving overall health and fostering trust in the healthcare system. She aims to continue to provide competent and compassionate care to her patients, advocate for better access for those in disadvantaged groups, mentor a diverse group of trainees for successful career. She wants to inspire confidence and portray competence and compassion in her interaction with patients, colleagues, collaborators and the community.
